Why Church Planting?

a summary of “Why Plant Churches?” by Tim Keller
“The vigorous, continual planting of new congregations is the single most crucial strategy for (1) the numerical growth of the body of Christ in a city and (2) the continual corporate renewal and revival of the existing churches in a city. Nothing else - not crusades, outreach programs, parachurch ministries, growing megachurches, congregational consulting, not church renewal processes - will have the consistent impact of dynamic, extensive church planting. This is an eyebrow-raising statement, but to those who have done any study at all, it is not even controversial…” - Tim Keller

”…Now the country (at least our country) is filled with churches. Why is church planting important now?”
  1. New churches reach new generations. It has been noticed that younger adults are drawn to newer congregations. The next generation are not as focused on having a great facility or having long-established customs, but long to be empowered by the local church.

  2. New churches reach the un-churched and de-churched. Studies have shown that a new church will gain 60-80 percent of its members from people who are not involved in a local church, while a church over 10-15 years old will gain 80-90 percent of its members by transfer from other churches.

  3. New churches help revitalize other churches. A question that is always asked is, “why not help the existing church?” The misconception is that new churches do not care for the existing church. On the contrary, new churches are one of the best ways to help revitalize older churches.

  4. New churches bring new ideas. As a new church grows, it has the freedom to be innovative and try new things. When the church succeeds with its new method it allows other churches to take notice and be encouraged to try it themselves.
